Black women, and any woman planning a hospital birth: if you've ever left an appointment with more questions than you walked in with, this is for you.

I was twenty years old and thirty-eight weeks pregnant when they turned me away at the door. It was an insurance error, and I was already in active labor. I called my mother, a nurse practitioner, and she gave me the language to go back in and advocate for myself. That moment is why I do this work.
I've worked bedside as a CNA, and I was part of Los Angeles's first cohort of Community Health Workers. My Birth MAP started as a free workbook, and it's been downloaded more than 500 times in 13 countries without a single ad.
